Card Sort Questions in Survey 2.0

On this page, you will find guidance for three types of card sort question: Card Sort - Select, Card Sort - Categorise and Card Sort - Associate.

If you are looking for a more interactive way of asking a multiple-choice question, a card sort question allows participants to respond by completing a drag and drop activity. 

Card Sort Select Questions in Survey 2.0

To add a card sort question, you can follow these steps:

  • Access the Back Room > Research Tools > SurveyMR 2.0.
  • Select your survey or click ‘Add Survey 2.0’ in the top right corner.
  • In the surveys' build tab, add a new question by first clicking and dragging the 'form' box from the left of the page onto the canvas or edit an existing form by clicking on the edit icon in the top right corner of the form.
  • Open the drop-down menu, and choose “Card sort - Select question”.

  • Add your question text within the question box provided.
  • Add your answer options in the answer box provided. If more boxes are needed, click ‘Add answer’.
    Good to know: So long as your copied answers are separated by a line break, these can all be pasted into the first box. The system will automatically create a box for each answer that you have pasted.

  • Under “Target image”, you will need to enter a background image for the question. In the example above, the shopping cart is the background image. Click ‘Add media’ which will open a new window titled “Media picker”.

  • Click ‘Select file’ to upload an image from your device. Good to know: Images should be one of the following file types: .gif, .jpg, .jpeg, .png (they will be resized into a square image automatically).
  • Once you have selected your image, you can give the image a title or description. Then click ‘Start Upload’. Adding a title for images helps with the usability and visibility for participants.
  • Click the image that has been uploaded, and select ‘Add Media’.
  • As with other questions in SurveyMR 2.0, you can also select the button for ‘Randomise the sub-questions’ and/or ‘Require Answers’ if you would like this question to be compulsory before proceeding further in the survey. If you are setting the question to ‘Require answers’, you can enter a minimum and/or maximum number of answers.

Card Sort Categorise Questions in Survey 2.0

Card sort categorise questions allow users to associate items into a larger category so that you as the researcher can see common categorisations made. This question can be used with or without media but works best as a visual medium.

To add a card sort categorise question, you can follow these steps:

  • Access the Back Room > Research Tools > SurveyMR 2.0.
  • Select your survey or click ‘Add Survey 2.0’ in the top right corner.
  • In the surveys' build tab, add a new question by first clicking and dragging the 'form' box from the left of the page onto the canvas or edit an existing form by clicking on the edit icon in the top right corner of the form.
  • Open the drop-down menu, and choose “Card sort - Categorise”.

  • Add your question text within the question box provided. This should give users an overall explanation of how you would like for them to interact with the sub-questions and answers.
  • Add your sub-questions to the requisite boxes, these will be dragged onto your answer boxes once the question is live. Though an image isn’t required, this question works best with visual stimuli added.
  • Add your answer options in the answer box provided. If more boxes are needed, click ‘Add answer’.

  • Images can be added to both your sub questions and answers via the image icon (highlighted below) which then allows you to upload the associated image.

  • Click ‘Select file’ to upload an image from your device. Good to know: Images should be one of the following file types: .gif, .jpg, .jpeg, .png (they will be resized into a square image automatically).
  • Once you have selected your image, you can give the image a title or description. Then click ‘Start Upload’. Adding a title for images helps with the usability and visibility for participants.

Card Sort Associate Questions in Survey 2.0

Card sort associate questions allow users to associate items with a category so that you as the researcher can see common sentiments for these categories. This question can be used with or without media but works best as a visual medium.

To add a card sort associate question, you can follow these steps:

  • Access the Back Room > Research Tools > SurveyMR 2.0.
  • Select your survey or click ‘Add Survey 2.0’ in the top right corner.
  • In the surveys' build tab, add a new question by first clicking and dragging the 'form' box from the left of the page onto the canvas or edit an existing form by clicking on the edit icon in the top right corner of the form.
  • Open the drop-down menu, and choose “Card sort - Associate”.
